Training program for “Specialist Pharmacist of Ambulatory Cancer Chemotherapy” based on the renewal of Amended Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Law Japanese Society of Pharmaceutical Oncology (JAPSO)

For pharmacies, start in April next year

In response to the Amended Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Law, JAPSO has been considering supporting the establishment of “pharmacy that collaborates with specialized medical institutions” since last fall. Based on the current “Accredited Pharmacist of Ambulatory Cancer Chemotherapy,” it was decided to establish the new system for a specialist pharmacist with the addition of on-the-job training as a new requirement.

A specialist pharmacist’s new system aims to train pharmacists to handle cancer drug therapy close collaboration between hospitals and pharmacies. A pharmacist can obtain certification through two routes: on-the-job training at a cancer clinic or by taking on-the-job training and passing the certified pharmacist exam. In addition to the certified pharmacist requirements, a minimum of 5 years of work experience at a hospital or pharmacy and completion of collaborative training at a cancer clinic.

On-the-job training at a cancer clinic, the critical point, must be conducted according to the core curriculum. A total of 30 credits must be earned within one year from the beginning of training, with one unit working hour per day. A pharmacist can even acquire 0.5 credits in half a day. The training facilities should apply flexible correspondence to pharmacists either from chain pharmacies or individual pharmacies. The training facilities and pharmacists will coordinate to determine the schedule so that the training method runs optimally, and pharmacists will receive training for six weeks in one year.

Besides, pharmacists receive training need first to attend startup seminars and enhancement seminars sponsored by JAPSO via e-learning, etc. to gain minimal knowledge of cancer drug therapy.

This year, we plan to conduct model training for 30 to 40 people as a pilot project. Trainees will be recruited from the middle of this month, and the training will be held from January next year. The number of facilities for model training is estimated to be around 50. The training content and core curriculum will be evaluated to verify the system’s structure and lead to full-scale implementation next year. Registration for next year’s training facilities will be opened from early January next year, and registration for trainees will be opened from mid-February.

Mr. Kato said that currently there are 402 cancer hospitals across the country, “Even if a cancer hospital’s pharmacy becomes a pharmacy that collaborates with specialized medical institutions, around 800 people need to have certification. Unless we certify a considerable number of people, we will not be able to meet social needs. ”

The biggest challenge is the recruitment of training facilities. Cooperation with cancer hospitals and cancer centers in each region is essential. However, full-scale implementation in the next year may still be challenging to achieve due to the lack of training facilities close to where the applicant lives.
Mr. Kato expressed his intention to “establish training facilities in every region of the country as much as possible” and called for participation in training facilities.

On the other hand, it is expected that there will be a shortage of human resources when the new system is established. So we will temporarily certify pharmacists as a specialist pharmacist for three years starting April next year based on the hospital or pharmacy’s work history for more than five years. If a temporary certified person completes on-the-job training by March 2024, he will officially acquire a specialist pharmacist. If these two requirements are met, you can be a specialist pharmacist without obtaining a temporary certification.

Mr. Kato said, “In order to provide good treatment for cancer patients as a pharmacy that collaborates with specialized medical institutions, the pharmacies and hospitals must work well together. I want you to be able to participate in the training even for a short period of time, and I hope more people do their best to meet people’s expectations, which will lead to an increase in assessments for pharmacist. ”
