An interview with Mr. Tamura, Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare, about the importance of increasing public awareness of regional collaborative pharmacies’ function and centralizing home medical care.

Norihisa Tamura, Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare, held a joint press conference with a specialized newspaper on the 14th. He stated that it is necessary to inform the public about the regional collaborative pharmacy contents, scheduled to start in August next year, and centralize home medical care. Showed motivation to raise awareness of pharmacy functions that can be handled continuously. He also indicated that he would discuss the drug price revision outlook next year after carefully examining the drug price survey results.

Part of the revised Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act (PMD Act) became effective in September, requiring pharmacists to provide continuous medication guidance. Mr. Tamura said, “Since it has been clarified that the role of pharmacists as a professional occupation will expand, it is necessary to pay close attention to the situation after the enforcement, including the results of online medication guidance.”

The certification system for regional collaborative pharmacies and pharmacies that collaborate with specialized medical institutions is scheduled for August next year. A draft of the Ministerial Ordinance was presented this month. Regarding regional collaborative pharmacies, Mr. Tamura says, “It is necessary to explain to the public in an easy-to-understand manner.” On the other hand, regarding pharmacies that collaborate with specialized medical institutions, it is necessary to respond to advanced pharmaceutical management’s needs with a pharmacy vision for patients. Based on the statement, “I am very much looking forward to the fact that patients can take medication with peace of mind based on highly specialized knowledge at the pharmacy.”

Regarding the implementation of the 2021 drug price revision, which has been dissented mainly by pharmaceutical organizations, he said, “If there is a large variation in the prices shown in the drug price survey, the reliability of the actual price will be a problem. I would like to discuss the revision after scrutinizing it. ”

The government has listed the permanentize of online medical care as one of its main measures and has agreed among the relevant ministers that the ban will be lifted in principle, including the first visit. Mr. Tamura said about the contents of the system after the ban was lifted, “I will ask experts about the parts that are not convenient and cannot be diagnosed properly, rather than breaking the current system.” In the end, about the schdule, he said, “I want it to be done as soon as possible and create an environment where patients can receive medical examinations with peace of mind.”
