【MHLW】The Use of Antimicrobial Drugs Down 10.9% – Did Not Reach the Goal Despite the Decrease for the Last 4 Consecutive Years

2020年11月16日 (月)

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has released an annual report which summarized the detection status of resistant bacteria in various fields including humans and animals and the trends in the amount of antimicrobial drugs used. The amount used in 2019 decreased by 10.9% compared to the year 2013, which marked a decrease for 4 consecutive years. However, they evaluated and concluded that “the decrease in width from the amount used last year [was] scarce” and pointed out the need to continuously perform education and awareness activities for medical professionals.

The report was written by summarizing the various survey results from the Central Hospital of the National Center for Global Health and Medicine, Clinical Reference Center, and so forth. The amount of antimicrobial drugs used for humans based on volume of sales was 13.28DID, which was a reduction of 10.9% compared to the amount in 2013, and internal medicine occupied 91.8% of the total. Regarding this result, they evaluated and concluded that “the decrease in width from the amount used in 2018 [was] scarce” even though it had decreased for 4 consecutive years.

The breakdown showed the highest percentage of use in the following order: macrolides (decreased by 20.6% compared to 2013), cephalosporins (decreased by 22.7%), and fluoroquinolone (decreased by 18.1%). However, none of the medicine reached the target decreasing rate value set for 2020.

The amount of injectable antimicrobial drugs used increased by 12.7% compared to the year 2013. A possible explanation for this is that the opportunities to use these drugs may be increasing due to the increasing number of elderly people.

In addition, the result of the investigation into the amount of oral medicine and injectable antimicrobial drugs used on a weight basis showed 599.6 tons increased by 30 tons from the year 2013.

In response to these results, the report decided that “there is a need to continuously perform education and awareness activities utilizing various methods for citizens and medical professionals.”
