The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) has released the “Annual Report on the Statistics of Production by Pharmaceutical Industry” for 2019. The domestic production value of pharmaceuticals increased by 37.3% year-on-year to 9.486 trillion yen. In terms of production value by prefecture, Saitama Prefecture rose to the top from the sixth place the previous year. The production value of regenerative medical products, which was surveyed for the first time, was 5.5 billion yen. The MHLW says that the results of this year’s survey show an increase or decrease from those of the previous year due to a change after a review of the survey methodology, including limitation of survey objects to manufacturing and sales offices.
In terms of production value by major pharmaceutical category, the top category, “Antineoplastics,” increased by 90% to 1.1617 trillion yen, a significant increase from the fourth place in the previous year. The share of antineoplastics in the total production value increased by 3.3 percentage points to 12.2%. “Other agents affecting metabolism” came in second with a 34.6% increase to 1.1554 trillion yen, followed by “Agents affecting central nervous system” in third with a 43% increase to 1.1226 trillion yen.
In terms of production value by prefecture, Saitama Prefecture jumped 2.6 times to 901.6 billion yen, followed by Tochigi Prefecture in second place with an 84.8% increase to 396.5 billion yen, and Shizuoka Prefecture, which topped the previous year’s list, in third place with a 24.7% increase to 838.2 billion yen. In fourth to tenth place were Toyama, Shiga, Hyogo, Yamaguchi, Aichi, Tokushima, and Kanagawa prefectures. Among the top 10, Yamaguchi and Shiga prefectures doubled their outputs, while Osaka Prefecture, which ranked third last year, disappeared from the top 10.
The production value of quasi-drugs increased by 34.4% to 1.3434 trillion yen, and that of regenerative medicine products, which was surveyed for the first time, was 5.5 billion yen.
On the other hand, the domestic production value of medical devices increased by 31.8% to 2.5678 trillion yen. The import value increased by 68.0% to 2.723 trillion yen, the export value increased by 51.1% to 1.009 trillion yen, and the domestic shipment value increased by 39.0% to 3.9864 trillion yen.
In 2019, the import value of pharmaceuticals decreased by 12.5% to 2.7531 billion yen, while the export value, which is directly shipped to overseas, increased 2.3 times to 442.5 billion yen. The value of domestic shipments rose by 14.5% to 11.2236 trillion yen.
According to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, adoption of new survey methodology in this year has enabled improvement in the collection rate, clarification of definitions, and other improvements, making it possible to publish more accurate figures compared to the previous year.
